Walmart’s Own EV Charging Network Hits the Ground

We finally got our hands on Walmart’s new official, store-branded EV chargers. While Walmart has partnered with Electrify America for years, the retail giant is now stepping into the infrastructure arena with its own proprietary network. We tested one of the fresh installations in the Dallas metro area, plugging in a Lexus RZ 450e F Sport test vehicle to see how the experience holds up.

Walmart is using Alpitronic HYC 400 fast chargers for these initial deployments in Texas, though reportings show they may test other hardware suppliers like ABB in northeast markets. Each station setup features dynamic pricing, native smartphone integration via the main Walmart app, and dual connectors serving both NACS (Tesla standard) and CCS vehicles on every stall.

What Retail Fast Charging Means for EV Drivers

Walmart’s decision to build out its own charging brand signals a major shift in urban and suburban fast-charging availability. Rather than focusing exclusively on highway corridors, Walmart is blanketing metro areas like Dallas and Phoenix. This strategy directly targets a massive group of EV drivers: people living in apartments or homes without access to dedicated overnight charging.

Integrating 15- to 30-minute high-power charging into weekly grocery runs changes the math for urban EV ownership. If you can fill your battery while picking up household supplies, charging stops stop feeling like dedicated chores. Furthermore, as store chains enter the network space, retail competition will likely drive sharper pricing during off-peak windows—such as Walmart's early-morning $0.25 per kWh rate.

We are also seeing a welcome trend toward larger site footprints. Rather than standard 4-stall builds, Walmart is aiming for 8, 10, or 12-stall locations. More plugs per site mean fewer queues, better reliability redundancies, and less stress when pulling up with a depleted battery.

The Electric Duo Take: Hands-On at the Station

We pulled up to the Dallas station right at the front of the parking lot. The first thing that stood out to us was the accessibility layout. Walmart nailed the ADA setup here: a massive parking footprint, smooth curb cutouts, clear walkway demarcations, and lower screen heights that allow anyone using a mobility device to plug in effortlessly.

The display screen on the Alpitronic 400 hardware remains one of our absolute favorites in the industry. It clearly shows real-time metrics, including line voltage (410V), current draw (146A), session kWh delivered, and average charging speeds. When we ended our test via the touch screen at 92%, the plug released immediately and our app logged 19.3 kWh delivered for $9.63.

Is the setup perfect? Not quite. The location of this particular array sits right on a main drive aisle near fast-food drive-thrus, which meant dodging heavy parking lot traffic while maneuvering into position. We would also love to see Walmart add basic amenities right at the stalls—like windshield cleaning squeegees or dedicated trash cans—so you don't have to walk up to the main storefront to drop off trash.

Overall, we came away impressed. Bringing rock-solid Alpitronic hardware under direct Walmart branding gives EV owners another dependable option on the road. Combining cheap off-peak rates with a standard grocery stop makes routine charging significantly more practical for everyday drivers.
